privacy policy

At Mumble, we take your privacy and the protection of your data seriously. We built Mumble to be private by default: it only listens while you hold the talk key, and only sees your screen the moment you ask it to. This policy explains what we collect, why, who we share it with, and the choices and rights you have.
This policy applies to the Mumble macOS application, the Mumble website (joinmumble.com), and the related services we provide.
1. Notice
Whenever we collect information that could identify you personally, we tell you and ask for your permission where required. Examples include requesting your email when you create an account, or asking macOS for permission to use your microphone or screen. You are always in control of what you share.
2. Consent
By downloading Mumble, creating an account, or using our services, you consent to the collection and use of your information as described here. Where we rely on your consent (for example, optional analytics), you can withdraw it at any time in Settings.
3. Information we collect
- Account information — your name and email address, so we can create your account, sign you in, and contact you about the service.
- Voice input — while you hold the talk key, your microphone audio is captured and sent for transcription so we can type what you said. We do not record you when the key is not held.
- Screen content — when you ask Mumble about your screen, it captures a screenshot at that moment to answer your question. Screenshots are used only to produce the answer and are not stored by us.
- Prompts & requests — the questions and instructions you give Mumble, so it can respond and carry out tasks.
- Usage & diagnostic data — anonymous product analytics (via PostHog) and basic diagnostic information to understand which features are used and to fix problems. You can turn analytics off in Settings.
4. How we use your information
We use the information above to provide, maintain, and improve Mumble: to transcribe your speech and insert it where your cursor is, to answer questions about your screen, to carry out tasks you ask for, to run your account and billing, to communicate with you, and to keep the service secure and reliable.
5. Permissions
macOS will ask you to grant these permissions. Mumble uses each only for its stated purpose, and only when you act:
- Microphone — to hear you while you hold the talk key.
- Screen Recording — to see your screen when you ask a question about it.
- Accessibility — to type into other apps and, when you ask, to point at or operate on-screen controls for you.
- Calendars / Reminders — only if you choose to connect those integrations.
6. Third-party processing
To turn your voice, screen, and questions into useful output, the relevant content is sent securely through our backend to trusted AI providers — currently OpenAI, Anthropic, and Deepgram — which process it and return a result. Our infrastructure and authentication are provided by Supabase, and product analytics by PostHog. These providers process data on our behalf to make Mumble work; we pass content through, we do not sell it.
7. Data retention
Your dictated text is transcribed and inserted where your cursor is; it is not stored by us unless you explicitly opt in to help improve transcription (off by default, and reversible in Settings). We keep account data for as long as you have an account. If you ask us to delete your account, we remove your associated personal data within 14 days, except where we are required to keep certain records by law.
8. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, export, or restrict the processing of your personal data, and to object to certain processing. We comply with applicable data-protection laws, including the EU/UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). To exercise any of these rights, email us at hi@joinmumble.com.
9. Choices & opt-out
You can turn off product analytics at any time in Settings. You can revoke any macOS permission in System Settings → Privacy & Security. You can stop using Mumble and delete your account whenever you like.
10. Cookies & the website
Our website uses only the cookies and similar technologies needed to run the site and understand basic, aggregated usage. We do not use them to build advertising profiles.
11. Security
Data in transit is encrypted with TLS, and your sign-in token is stored securely on your Mac in the macOS Keychain. We follow standard practices to protect your information, but no method of transmission or storage is ever completely secure.
12. Children
Mumble is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under the age required to consent in their country.
13. We don’t sell your data
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it except with the providers named above who process it on our behalf to make Mumble work.
14. Changes
We may update this policy as Mumble evolves. We will change the date at the top and, for significant changes, let you know.
